Changes coming to local intersection
After a tragic and fatal accident at the intersection near South Spencer High School, changes are in the works to make it safer.
I attended the initial hearing on this issue in June and have been vocal for the need to make this area safer for students and motorists. I have been extremely encouraged by the attention paid by the Indiana Department of Transportation to make sure such a terrible accident isn't repeated. They took the time to listen to the concerns of local parents and community members in an effort to find an agreeable solution.
A follow-up hearing was held this week to discuss INDOT's decision. In a proactive effort to make this intersection safer, INDOT has decided to install a temporary traffic light. This will be in place as they prepare to turn the intersection into a roundabout.
After learning this, not only do I believe that INDOT heard and listened to the community's concerns, but I also believe they took them to heart. As an area legislator, I appreciate the care and concern they showed on this issue.
This entire process is a great example of how local activism can lead to positive change. I am proud of the community for standing up for children's safety and I am proud of all the state officials who worked to make their suggestions a reality.
We never want to see a young person with so much to offer laid to rest. If there is anything else that we can do to make students safer, please do not hesitate to contact me.
